journal art illustration surfing

While researching a possible career in illustration, and being a keen surfer, I noticed that the genre of "surf art" had potential, but was also cluttered with some of the worst kitsch I'd yet seen.

I tend to want to draw and paint the things I am currently obsessed with. At the time it was surfing, and so I often used to watch surf movies with a sketchbook on my lap. I'd draw scenes as if I were on the boat in the Mentawais as well. If only.

At the same time, I was experimenting with processing hand drawn images on a computer. The result was this series of surf-inspired hybrid-media images, with these two being the best examples. I like to think that they're a little less tacky than the rest of the genre.

Inspiration

Thinking for a Living

Serious inspiration, on tap. Thinking for a Living is an online magazine for designers and other aesthetes. The main attractions for me are the thoughtfully written feature articles and the carefully curated list of links.

Pictory

Pictory is a beautifully designed and tightly curated photography showcase. The combination of large beautiful images with human stories delivers a compelling experience, not dissimilar to that of pouring over a high quality book.

SouthSouthWest

SouthSouthWest is a Melbourne based design studio responsible for putting out razor sharp work. When I need to remind myself why I love what I do, I'll visit their portfolio to see design as good as it can be.

Mash

Mash makes beautiful and surprising design for enlightened clients. Interestingly, they do a lot of wine label work, and they're amazing. All packaging should be this good!
